UPM Produces PadiMedical System That Manages Medical Images Using AI

Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) introduced the PadiMedical system that manages medical images using artificial intelligence (AI). PadiMedical was developed specifically to replace existing systems that require physical films and compact discs to share medical data. With this system, diagnosis on patients can be done earlier.

It can be accessed through smart devices because it uses cloud storage infrastructure. A rapid diagnosis process is essential in critical cases. PadiMedical is able to sort and filter cases based on priority, allowing doctors to focus on cases that require immediate attention.

The collected data can then be used to train a locally made AI algorithm specific to the medical community in Malaysia. This is important because one of the problems with AI is that the data is not compatible with where it is needed. If trained using local data, the understanding is more compatible with local needs.

In addition to PadiMedical, UPM also received funding to establish the Malaysian Cryptology Technology and Management Center in collaboration with NACSA to pursue quantum computing AI as a preparation to face cyber security threats.

The use of AI to assist the patient diagnosis process has already started in recent years. Google DeepMind for example uses AI to detect breast cancer more accurately while Microsoft uses it to speed up the detection of cervical cancer.
