Apple AirTag is a fairly popular object tracker. It uses UWB connection to be able to find things precisely. Its use is popular enough that Google updated Find My Device to be like Apple Find My. Most recently, Apple tested the ability to share users' AirTag locations.
This feature is different from sharing AirTag with other users which was previously limited to family members only. Share Item Location allows users to share the location of an object with AirTag to anyone. In addition, lost objects can also be shared. This feature is to make the search process easier so that more people can find it, such as lost luggage at the airport or with friends while on vacation.
After sharing, users need to give a special link to the individual they want to share. This link will expire in 7 days. The number of individuals accessing this link will also be displayed. Apple is also testing a feature for users to share details of personal information such as name and phone number so that lost objects after being tracked can be immediately notified to the owner.
This feature is being tested in iOS 18.2 second developer beta version. It is expected to arrive in stable form as early as December along with ChatGPT integration.
