Apple Offers $1 Billion Investment in Indonesia to Enable iPhone 16 Sales

Apple is now offering a $1 billion investment in Indonesia to enable the iPhone 16 series to be sold in the country. This is a 900% increase over the original $100 million offer that was rejected by the Indonesian Ministry of Industry.

Investment Minister Rosan Roeslani said Apple's proposed commitment in Indonesia would be known within a week. He said companies benefiting from sales in Indonesia would need to invest and create jobs in the country.

How this differs from Apple's original investment plan is still unknown. Previously, Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita said the investment in accessory factories was insufficient when compared to Apple's investments in Thailand and Vietnam. Indonesia wants to be part of Apple's backend chain, which would also meet the needs of at least 40% of the components in devices for the local market to be built locally before the devices can be sold.
