Project Rainier was announced by Amazon Web Services (AWS) as an artificial intelligence (AI) computer cluster that uses their own designed Trainium2 chips. These AI computers will be used by Anthropic to train their artificial intelligence (AI) models.
The AWS infrastructure is being used by Anthropic because they have received $8 million in funding from Amazon. Through this partnership, Amazon wants to access AI capabilities from competitor OpenAI and at the same time Anthropic will share proposals for developing the next generation of Trainium chips.
Each Trainium2 chip is designed to optimize the task of training the latest AI models. It is equipped with eight NeuronCores cores that are also paired with 96GB of HBM memory. Project Rainier AI will have hundreds of thousands of Trainium 2 chips placed in Trn2 UltraServers.
Construction of Project Rainier is expected to be completed next year and when operational, will allow Anthropic to access five times the processing power they used before.
