The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is committed to ensuring a safer internet ecosystem for all, especially children and families. Its Minister, Fahmi Fadzil, said that his party will monitor and take additional measures if there are social media platforms that fail to implement the age restrictions set by the platform.
Most media platforms currently set the age limit for use at 13 years old. In this case, if it is found that the relevant parties have failed to enforce the age restrictions or irregularities have been detected, the government will consider additional measures against them.
Fahmi, who is also a government spokesperson, said there is no intention to limit a specific age for the use of social media in this country as implemented in Australia. In addition, Fahmi explained that his party has handed over the task of enforcing the age to the social media platforms as a guarantee of policy stability because his party does not want to restrict freedom of expression.
Meanwhile, the social media and internet messaging platform, which currently has at least eight million users, is in the final phase of the application service provision class license registration process under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
