Iran Lifts Blockades on WhatsApp and Google Play

Iranian authorities have allowed WhatsApp and Google Play to be used in their country. Both apps were banned two years ago after they were used to organize anti-government demonstrations. The Supreme Council of Cyberspace voted to allow the apps to be used in what is seen as an attempt to ease some of the internet controls imposed on Iranians.

Facebook, X, YouTube and Telegram apps are still blocked. However, Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Hosseini Khamenei still has access to his X account, which is still quite active. Iranians who want to use all of the blocked apps must use a VPN service. The internet blockade allows for the control of information and the dissemination of news from outside.
