A few months ago, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission announced that Malaysia is currently in the process of transitioning to using IPv6 digital addresses by 2028.
This will be done to enable the internet and digital infrastructure in Malaysia to continue to grow with the addition of limited IP addresses from IPv4 technology (from around 4.3 billion addresses) to IPv6 which offers a much larger number of IP addresses (3.4 x 1038 IP addresses).
Recently, Cloudflare, a global internet network infrastructure operator company, recently released a report on global internet usage in 2024, and showed some interesting details about Malaysia's achievements in this sector.
They reported that dual-stack requests (requests to communicate with IP addresses using both IPv4 and IPv6 technologies at once) from Malaysia showed an increase to 59.6 percent using the IPv6 protocol, up from 57.3 percent from the previous year.
This somewhat shows that internet network providers in Malaysia have begun to switch to using the IPv6 protocol, in line with the announcement from the MCMC. In this aspect, Malaysia is seen to lose only to India, where the percentage of IPv6 protocol usage is as high as 68.9 percent.
This is because Reliance Jio, the largest internet service operator in India where 94 percent of their network uses the IPv6 protocol.
