The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) announced that 2,444 pornographic websites and content, especially prostitution, were blocked for the period from 1 January 2022 to 1 December 2024. This involved blocking on various social media platforms with a total of 279 websites blocked in addition to the reduction of around 2,165 pornographic content.
Its Minister, Fahmi Fadzil, in a statement announced that the highest reduction in content involved platforms such as Facebook with a total of 46.84 percent followed by TikTok (30.44 percent) and Telegram (21.20 percent). The action was taken due to violations of community standards set by official applications from enforcement agencies as well as public complaints received by MCMC.
MCMC continues to be committed to improving the overall user experience by providing technical assistance to speed up the investigation process and the collection of necessary evidence. In addition, it provides a more proactive approach in identifying trends in cybercrime activities through the implementation of licenses for social media and internet messaging services which will take effect from 1 January 2025.
