Micron is the next chip manufacturing company to confirm it will receive funding from a CHIPS Act grant to spur production of high-tech memory chips in the United States.
The company known for its memory chip and storage components said it would receive a grant of as much as $6.1 billion (~RM27 billion) from the United States government to upgrade its factories in New York and Idaho over the next 20 years.
This investment is to allow the United States to increase production of advanced memory chips from the United States from 2 percent to 10 percent by 2035. Micron also previously stated that they want to invest approximately $50 billion by 2030 to upgrade their memory chip production technology.
With this investment, it is expected to create 20 thousand new job opportunities in the United States, but for the immediate future, it is also reported that Micron will receive a $275 million investment to upgrade their memory factory in Manassas, Virginia to bring their 1-alpha technology to United States to allow them to release LPDDR5 DRAM memory components there. The upgrade is expected to create 400 new job opportunities at Micron, and as many as 2700 jobs for the purposes of the upgrade.
