OpenAI Announces Intention to Restructure to Become a Profit-Based Company

OpenAI today shared that they are evaluating changing their corporate structure to a for-profit company. This step is said to be necessary in order to reach the AGI development phase and advance artificial intelligence to the next level.

OpenAI was founded in 2015 as a non-profit research lab. However, over the years, with the need for funds for development and research, they have changed their structure slightly and accepted investments from a number of companies, including Microsoft. Today, OpenAI is controlled by a non-profit body, which makes it limited in terms of profit generation and shareholding. However, moving forward, they are evaluating changing their structure to a fully for-profit company.

OpenAI says that they do not want to be just a pilot company or development lab, but want to be a strong company. The move to change to a for-profit structure will also allow them to develop a parallel company for the needs of shareholders and the public.

One of the methods shared by OpenAI is that they are divided into two parts, where the for-profit part will focus on OpenAI's operations and business, while the non-profit part will focus on charitable initiatives in sectors such as health, education, and science.
