What makes me dislike Instagram is that its built-in camera app does not take advantage of the capabilities of the device's camera app. Night mode support, portrait mode or telephoto zoom cannot be used and the results of the photos look ordinary. This has been changing gradually this year.
Last October, Google Pixel 6 and above began receiving a new Instagram update where Pixel's night mode, Night Sight, can be used directly in the Instagram app. Most recently, the same support was introduced for the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra, Galaxy Z Flip6 and Galaxy Z Fold6. This feature will be activated when a dark environment is detected and users can press the moon icon that appears.
This feature has actually been developed by Google for a long time through their own camera API. However, not many manufacturers wanted to use it until recently with 120 different devices with 75 million active users. Google's camera API is not limited to night mode only because if developers want their camera apps to also take advantage of bokeh, beauty mode and HDR features.
Coming in Android 16, this night mode feature will be further improved by being able to notify users of unsuitable lighting conditions. Then users can also directly press Off or On to use it.
