Sony and AMD Collaborate on Project Amethyst to Develop PlayStation 6



Sony and AMD have announced a collaboration to develop a next-generation GPU that will be used in the upcoming PlayStation 6 console. The collaboration is called Project Amethyst, a color created by combining AMD's red with Sony's blue.


Through Project Amethyst, Sony and AMD's collaboration in console chip development since the PS3 continues on the 10th generation console. The Project Amethyst chip will focus on machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI).


PS6 game developers will be given the option of using AI to improve graphics quality through the implementation of PSSR or to improve game capabilities with smarter NPCs. The experience of developing the chip for the PS5 Pro based on RDNA2.X gives Sony and AMD an idea of ​​what is needed in the next generation console chip.
