Sony today announced a strategic partnership with Kadokawa, including acquiring a new stake in Kadokawa. With this change, Sony is now the largest shareholder in Kadokawa, with a 10% stake in the company.
Kadokawa is already known for a number of exciting IPs under their umbrella, including publishing books, novels and comics – in addition to games and anime. Sony says that the combination of Kadokawa’s IP and Sony’s own IP ecosystem will enable a more comprehensive global reach, including anime and video games – in line with Sony’s long-term vision.
Kadokawa and Sony have previously collaborated on several projects, and with this new investment, deeper collaboration is expected to be established – including joint investments in content and IP.
The two companies also plan to discuss adapting Kadokawa’s IP into TV series and TV dramas globally, developing anime, and distributing Kadokawa’s anime globally, as well as publishing Kadokawa’s video games.
