The Three Gorges Dam on the Yangtze River is the world's largest hydroelectric dam, having begun operations in 2003 after taking 9 years to build. The record held by the Three Gorges Dam will soon be surpassed by the construction of a new dam in Tibet.
It will be built on the Yarlung Zangbo River (also known as the Brahmaputra River) and will be able to produce 300 billion kWh of electricity per year. This is more than three times the 88.2 billion kWh per year output generated by the Three Gorges Dam.
The construction cost is estimated to reach $137 billion (~RM 612 billion), which will also make it one of the world's largest infrastructure construction projects. When construction will begin and the date of operation has not yet been announced by Chinese authorities.
Although the dam has not yet been built, it has already received opposition from India and Bangladesh, who are concerned about the impact of a giant dam on the river that is the source of their water supply.
