The current implementation of AWAS cameras on highways is said to be less than ideal, as they are placed in a static location, causing drivers to only reduce speed when passing close to them. This is different from the original objective of reducing vehicle speed, thereby reducing the risk of accidents.
For this purpose, the Ministry of Transport is now sharing a new approach that will be implemented through the use of a number of technologies. Through this step, the camera will monitor the speed of a vehicle between two camera points, as well as measure the average speed of the vehicle based on distance and travel time.
The Minister of Transport said that if the driver uses less time than necessary, then it means that the driver is speeding and will be fined. For the beginning, this implementation method will be carried out in hilly areas on the Kuala Lumpur-Karak Highway in Genting Sempah, and the Menora Tunnel, Ipoh.
With this step, it is hoped that the rate of road accidents can be reduced, as well as increasing driver awareness and discipline on the road.
