BYD Launches World's Largest Car Carrier Cargo Ship

BYD is the world's largest electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer by 2024. This is done by expanding operations to more markets and this requires vehicle systems manufactured in China to be exported in large quantities. Last weekend they launched BYD Shenzhen which is the world's largest car carrier.

This ship is of the Ro-Ro type that can carry up to 9200 cars at a time. It is also BYD's fourth car carrier after Explorer No 1, Changzhou and Hefei. In just a year, all four of these new carriers have started operations. By 2026, BYD wants to have a fleet of eight vehicle carriers.

Overall, BYD Shenzhen is 219 meters long, 37.7 meters wide with the ability to sail at a speed of 18.5 knots. It has a hybrid engine that can use conventional marine fuel as well as more environmentally friendly LNG.

In addition, it also has a BYD battery pack system that allows it to operate entirely on electricity for operations in port areas that want to reduce carbon emissions.
