TikTok is expected to be completely banned in the US on January 19th, and if you follow internet trends, you’ve probably heard about how many Americans have started downloading the social media app Xiaohongshu to replace it.
The Xiaohongshu app is available on all mobile platforms globally, but the app’s interface is still in Mandarin, and the majority of users on the platform will also post in that language.
Because of this, it’s also seen that many Americans have started learning Mandarin. Duolingo, the language learning app, recently announced that they saw a 216 percent increase in users in the country who started learning the language compared to last year.
Duolingo said that a survey asking where these new users heard about Duolingo, many gave the answer “TikTok” as the answer. Duolingo has also made jokes about wanting to learn Mandarin due to the increase in user registrations on both their app and Xiaohongshu.
