Eclipsa Audio System Will Be Supported by Android Devices as an Alternative to Dolby Atmos

Immersive Audio Model and Formats (IAMF) was officially introduced with the commercial name Eclipsa Audio at the CES 2025 event. It is for an open source spatial audio standard that has been adopted by the Alliance for Open Media. It was developed by Samsung and Google so that they no longer have to pay a license to Dolby Atmos.

When it was introduced, Eclipsa Audio was for audio products, televisions and Chrome devices. The Google Open Source site last week announced that this new audio standard will also be coming to Android devices. More specifically, Android 16 because they stated that it would be included in the next AOSP. The Android 16 AOSP code has already been introduced to developers with a Beta version to be offered around this week.

Eclipsa Audio offers free software to modify or produce audio and video files, in addition to also having a special website to test finished audio files. It is not sure if Eclipsa Audio can be provided to existing Android devices with an update or is limited to new generation devices only.
