Meta has decided to end its fact-checking service on the platform. It will then adopt a community-based approach similar to the Community Notes X system. This change will cover the Facebook, Instagram, and Threads platforms to address false information in the future. As a result, people have begun to express concerns about the matter, where it should be in place to curb misinformation, especially involving politics.
In a statement, Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said that Meta's action will have an impact but will not affect the social media community in Malaysia in the near future. He does not see it affecting the Malaysian market, but only the United States. In fact, he believes that the Community Notes concept is based on crowdsourcing and has both advantages and disadvantages. He added that it could also be a good way to be part of a broader moderation system. At present, Meta is said to have not yet contacted the MCMC to discuss the matter further.
Basically, this shift in focus is made to increase freedom of expression among users, as well as minimize system errors. However, it has been criticized by many who say it could lead to an increase in the spread of false information, as well as potentially harmful content throughout the platform ecosystem.
