As promised, the HDMI Forum has announced the HDMI 2.2 specification for future products. With this new specification, it supports displays up to 8K 120Hz resolution and also 4K 480Hz. The bandwidth of HDMI 2.2 cables has also been doubled to 96Gbps to support AR/VR/Mr equipment, spatial reality products, commercial displays, large-scale digital signage, medical imaging equipment and machine vision.
In addition, the Latency Indication Protocol (LIP) which improves audio and visual synchronization has also been introduced for audio equipment such as soundbars. The first products supporting HDMI 2.2 will be launched in H1 2025.
This is the first update to the HDMI specification, with the last time it was done eight years ago for HDMI 2.1 which has only recently started to be supported by most commercial products on the market.
