Intel Wants All Future Laptops to Use Modular Components

Will future laptops be fully modular? Last weekend, Intel shared a proposal to make modular designs the standard used by all laptop manufacturers. Intel said that this change to the design will make it easier to upgrade components and, more importantly, replace damaged parts in the future.

This will also reduce pollution caused by the piles of electronic waste or e-waste that have been a problem in the industry for a long time. All components of the laptop proposed by Intel can be replaced including the motherboard, memory, cooling system, WiFi card and also various I/O.

Also proposed is that the motherboard is now broken into three different components and a change to the LPCAMM type of memory that Micron launched last year. This RAM is attached using screws to the motherboard instead of being soldered as some manufacturers do.

At a glance, this design proposed by Intel is very similar to what Framework has been offering since 2021.
