A landlord in Ipoh was forced to pay an electricity bill of RM1,142,511.75 after a tenant used their premises to illegally mine crypto. In a Facebook post on Sunday, a demand notice from Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) was attached, demanding that the amount be paid within 14 days of receipt or face legal action.
The landlord discovered a crypto mining operation at his commercial premises and immediately reported it to the authorities. However, he was shocked to have to pay the excessive bill due to the tenant's operation. In Malaysia, landlords are liable if tenants fail to pay their utility bills.
In July, TNB said it had lost RM3.4 billion in energy revenue over the five years between 2018-2023. Crypto mining has been popular again since the beginning of this year due to its soaring value. The FTX, Terraform Labs and Binance scandals caused the price of cryptocurrencies to plummet two years ago.
