Last US Conventional Aircraft Carrier Sold for 4.5 Cents

The USS John F Kennedy (CV 67) was launched in 1968 as the last conventionally fueled aircraft carrier in the United States. After nearly 60 years in service, the ship was sold by the US Navy (USN) for $0.01 (RM 0.045) to be scrapped in Texas.

The ship was decommissioned in 2007 due to its age and the USN's desire to use only nuclear-powered carriers. It was then stored in Philadelphia with the intention of turning it into a floating museum. But after several proposals to build a museum failed to materialize, the historic ship was sold. On January 16, it was towed to Texas to be scrapped.

During its 39 years of operation, the USS JFK was involved in Operation Desert Shield to liberate Kuwait and also Operation Enduring Freedom to invade Afghanistan after the 9/11 attacks. Although the USS JFK (CV 67) is now headed for scrap, its name will be carried on by the USS JFK (CV 79) which will begin operations this year as a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier.
