Mastodon Announces Plans to Move to a Non-Profit Structure

Mastodon is a social service, which emphasizes decentralized offerings. Recently, the owner of Mastodon announced the transfer of a number of assets including the name to a non-profit entity. This entity is registered in Europe.

This new entity will look after various key aspects of the Mastodon ecosystem, and ensure that they are in line with the mission and objectives of the service. At the same time, with this step, it will allow Mastodon to remain free from corporate control that would lead to the integration of advertising or misuse of data.

This step will also ensure the long-term viability of the platform, as well as being an alternative to various other social media that are controlled by individuals today, such as Mark Zuckerberg for Meta, and Elon Musk's X.

Mastodon allows anyone to start their own social network, and is not tied to a main server. The Mastodon.social and Mastodon.online services will continue as usual for now.
