A total of 8,756 cyberbullying-related content was taken down by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) throughout 2024, said Deputy Minister of Communications Teo Nie Ching. The number showed a significant increase compared to the 1,763 content taken down in 2023.
Teo said the effects of cyberbullying can cause serious emotional effects on victims, and can have a profound impact on their lives in the long term. Various parties including individuals, families, schools, and society need to play a comprehensive role in curbing the issue of cyberbullying before it becomes a big deal. He said the government has also implemented program initiatives such as Klik Dengan Bijak (KDB) to increase user awareness of the importance of using the Internet wisely. To date, the program has involved more than 17,000 participants in Pahang alone last year.
Recently, the government announced that it will implement an online safety campaign in secondary and primary schools nationwide in the near future. The campaign was held to increase understanding and awareness among parents, teachers and school students about online safety to avoid becoming victims of cybercrime.
