OpenAI Launches Operator – An AI Agent That Automates Web Tasks

OpenAI has launched a new service, Operator, which is an artificial intelligence (AI) agent that can automate web tasks instead of human workers. Operator is based on the GPT-4o model, which can identify information displayed on the screen, allowing it to understand the website interface and manipulate input using a mouse and keyboard. It can also interact with any website without accessing a separate API.

Operator also has the ability to self-correct mistakes if it gets stuck while performing a task on the web. It will only ask for human assistance if it needs to enter sensitive information such as logging in to an account related to the task.

To make Operator a success, OpenAI is working with DoorDash, Instacart, OpenTable, Priceline, StubHub, Thumbtack, and Uber. Operator can be used by ChatGPT Pro customers to instruct them to make grocery purchases by simply giving voice commands.

At this point, Operator is classified as a research product and can only be accessed by ChatGPT Pro customers in the United States for a fee of $200 per month.
