Pebble entered the smartwatch world in 2012 through a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign. It was the first to show the potential of a smartwatch in everyday life. Financial problems caused the company to close in 2016 and the intellectual property was sold to Fitbit, which was then sold to Google in 2021.
Yesterday, Pebble creator Eric Migicovsky announced that he would be producing a new generation of Pebble with several improvements. The announcement came after Google said that all of the PebbleOS intellectual property is now open source software that can be used by anyone who is interested in using it.
Migicovsky said that this second-generation Pebble will use an e-ink screen that will stay on all the time but still save battery life. The battery also needs to last longer, physical control buttons, a simple interface that is easy to understand and the ability to be “hacked” by users to use their own watch faces.
