The government has announced the implementation of social media platform licensing, and with the arrival of the new year 2025, the directive will come into effect starting today. With this step, all social media platforms with at least 8 million users are required to have a license to operate in Malaysia, and if not, they will have violated the prescribed act.
This licensing step is done to ensure that platforms are more responsible in managing their respective platforms, while ensuring that no harmful content including pornography, gambling and fraud is restricted on their respective platforms. This licensing process is for social media platforms and not for individuals.
A total of 8 social media platforms are required to apply for a license at the moment, namely WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, X (formerly Twitter) YouTube, Telegram, WeChat and TikTok. According to the latest sharing, it is said that Telegram and WeChat have begun the licensing application process.
Platforms convicted under this new licensing implementation can be fined up to RM500,000 plus a daily fine for continuous offenses.
