Sony To End Production Of Blu-Ray And Several Other Physical Media Formats Completely – No Replacement Announced

Sony Japan today issued a brief statement saying that its Blu-Ray media discs, MiniDisc, MD Data and MiniDV tapes will be completely discontinued in February of this year.

The statement also said that these physical media will have no replacement and that Sony customers who use these media will likely have to find new ways to store their data.

Sony has already stopped production of Blu-Ray discs in mid-2024, and now, the same decision seems to have been made for their commercial customers, probably medium and large companies that use these discs for medium-term data storage.

Blu-Ray technology was introduced in 2000 and has been used for a variety of purposes, such as a medium for high-definition (4K) movies and for console games used since the Sony PlayStation 3 era up to the current Sony PlayStation 5.
