TikTok Fined $10 Million in Venezuela for Failing to Stop Deadly Trend

TikTok has been fined $10 million by a Venezuelan court after failing to stop the spread of a viral challenge that killed three children. The viral trend involved inhaling chemicals and left another 200 children injured.

The court gave TikTok eight days to pay up and open an office in Venezuela if it did not want to face further action. Viral challenges are one of the reasons TikTok is so popular, especially among young people, because they allow them to do the same thing.

TikTok has been blamed several times for incidents caused by dangerous viral challenges on its platform. Last August, a US court allowed TikTok to be sued over a “blackout challenge” that led to the death of a 10-year-old boy.
