TikTok Granted 75-Day Extension to Sell Business in the United States

Yesterday, TikTok resumed operations in the United States after a 14-hour shutdown to comply with the Foreign Enemy Apps Act signed by President Biden. Immediately after taking the oath of office, President Trump signed an executive order giving Bytedance another 75 days to sell its TikTok business in the United States.

As reported yesterday, Trump wants TikTok's business to be 50% owned by a US entity. He said he would hold discussions with several local entities to acquire TikTok.

China has previously said that any decision involving the acquisition of a company must be made independently and based on the law. The decision must be based on its own market principles.

Despite the 75-day extension of operations, the Foreign Enemy Apps Act is still in effect. This is why Google and Apple are still reluctant to offer the TikTok app back on their stores because they do not want to face the implications of being fined for violating national laws. Only TikTok has resumed operations in the United States, with other Bytedance-owned apps such as CapCut, Lemon8 and Marvel Snap still blocked.

The Foreign Enemy Apps Act was passed with bipartisan support last year, claiming that apps owned by enemy countries like China pose a serious risk to the security of the United States.
