In Malaysia, it went viral at the end of last year when World (formerly Worldcoin) began taking iris scans of local users for a reward in the form of cryptocurrency. This is a project under Tools for Humanity by Sam Altman to popularize the use of their cryptocurrency by receiving cooperation from MIMOS and MyEG in Malaysia.
But in Brazil, the Data Protection Authority has banned Tools for Humanity from collecting iris scans of the country's residents. This is because the crypto rewards given are seen as being able to cloud the decisions of users who voluntarily provide their biometric data.
In addition to Brazil, World has also been ordered to stop iris scanning activities in Hong Kong, Kenya, Spain and Portugal due to concerns about the privacy of the user data collected.
