World's First Satellite Video Call Made by Vodafone

SMS and voice call services using satellite connections have been offered on modern smartphones since 2022. Now Vodafone, a communications company from the United Kingdom, has also made the world's first satellite video call, which will be offered to its customers in Europe by the end of this year.

The call was made between a Vodafone engineer in a location in Wales that does not have a cellular network and the company's CEO Margherita Della Valle. The 45-second call was made in a demo shared by Vodafone. This service is the result of Vodafone's collaboration with telecommunications company AST SpaceMobile. Although the service will be launched this year, there is still no information on how much it will cost.

What makes this technology interesting is that video calls using satellite networks are made through existing 4G and 5G smartphones without special equipment. Through this service, customers can also enjoy an internet network with a speed of 120 Mbps in locations that usually do not have cellular service.
