China seems to be taking the lead in the development of open artificial intelligence models compared to the West. After the popularity of DeepSeek recently, Baidu has now announced that they will start offering their Ernie artificial intelligence model openly starting June 30, 2025.
The offering of the open source version is expected to coincide with the introduction of a new generation for Ernie. Baidu is ready to offer artificial intelligence-based services in China, but its use is not as high as the use of Doubao offered by Bytedance or DeepSeek itself.
With the open offering, it is expected to allow faster development, in addition to the new technology being spread more widely than usual. Baidu's upcoming model is Ernie 5, and is expected to offer performance that rivals the upcoming GPT-5.
