Fahmi Fadzil: MCMC in talks with TikTok following 18 media accounts blocked on the platform

Last week, there was an incident where a girl was kidnapped by a man during dawn prayers in Batang Kali. The incident was reported by the media, and a video of it was also circulated.

A total of 18 local media organizations that use the short video platform TikTok have found their accounts blocked by TikTok itself due to the video recording, even though it has been censored to not show the child's face and body.

Malaysian Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said that the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is in talks with TikTok regarding the matter.

He said that the initial information he received related to TikTok's AI content review and moderation system which saw the video as sexually explicit content against children, and the media accounts were automatically blocked, as such content is not allowed on the platform.

Discussions are underway with TikTok to see if the media accounts can be reinstated and to allow them to report the case on their platform.

TikTok has said that such content, even if it has been edited to not show the child's face and body, is still not allowed, and if it is caught by their content moderation AI, it will result in the account being blocked without warning.
