Google Cloud And Digital Ministry Announce ‘AI At Work 2.0’ Initiative For Civil Servants

The government officially launched the National AI Office (NAIO) on December 12, 2024. It also saw the introduction of several important initiatives including AI at Work. The initiative is a joint effort between the Digital Ministry and Google Cloud to integrate Gemini for Google Workspace into the daily workflow of civil servants.

It is now entering its second phase with a focus on increasing the benefits of Gemini for Google Workspace for civil servants. This includes the integration of generative AI technology into Google Workspace applications such as Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drive, Meet, and Chat. This is to help them work smarter through the automation of repetitive tasks, reduce the amount of manual data entry and help create engaging content quickly.

With Gemini Advanced, they can use AI models in an effort to complete the most complex tasks such as coding and analyzing data. In addition, they can also share new ideas and help evaluate different approaches. There is also NotebookLM Plus which functions to summarize various types of content such as video, audio, documents and websites into easy-to-understand notes.

They can upload various forms of resources, whether documents, websites or multimedia content, and then ask questions about the information in the resource. The answers received will be provided in the form of short excerpts or AI podcast summaries. Google Vids, on the other hand, can help them quickly create professional videos with the help of AI without the need for in-depth video editing expertise.

AI at Work 2.0 will provide specific training to help civil servants use Gemini for Google Workspace effectively. This will include practical workshops to help users write appropriate prompts and identify how the tool can provide full benefits. Up to 445,000 civil servants from various government agencies will have access until 2028 through Google Workspace at no additional cost. According to Google, all government data will be confidential and confidential.

Meanwhile, Malaysians can also expect to see the digitalization of the public sector in a systematic, efficient and fully integrated manner between 2026 and 2030. This approach will be carried out through the GovTech concept which focuses on several aspects including accessible and citizen-centric public services. Essentially, digital technology will be used to provide more user-friendly services and meet their current needs.

This policy has two phases, the first phase of which will be launched this year. Then its full implementation is expected to be seen between 2026 and 2030. The government will also ensure that citizens can log in to one platform, and on that platform they can access all Government services smoothly. Guidelines for the use of AI for the public will also be published and is tentatively scheduled to be launched by the end of February.

For the record, AI at Work is a Google pilot program announced in December 2024 in collaboration with the Ministry of Digital. NAIO has been tasked with shaping AI policy and addressing regulatory issues as part of Malaysia's objective to strengthen its position as a regional hub for the technology.
