Google Photos Adds SynthID Watermark to Magic Editor-Edited Photos

Magic Editor is a quick editing feature in Google Photos that can quickly remove or add objects with the help of artificial intelligence (AI). Starting this week, Google Photos will begin embedding SynthID watermarks in the metadata of every photo that has been manipulated using Magic Editor.

The watermark can be read using Google Photos and other software that can read image metadata. This is an effort by Google to allow people to see for themselves the authenticity of the photos they see. SynthID was launched by Google in 2023 as a way to combat the increasingly serious problem of fake images online. It was later used to mark text that was also generated using generative AI last year.
