Meta is reportedly in talks to acquire a South Korean-based AI chip development startup. The company, known as FuriosaAI, was founded in 2017 and is led by a former Samsung Electronics employee.
Recently, with the rising costs of artificial intelligence development, various companies are looking to develop their own AI chips, thus reducing their development costs compared to relying on third parties such as NVIDIA and others. Developing their own chips is also expected to allow them to further optimize their models.
Meta itself is ready to make high investments in this arena, through its Meta AI offering. The function has been promised to be offered to local users, but has not yet been introduced.
It is reported that if everything goes smoothly, Meta may complete the acquisition of this South Korean AI chip development company as early as February.
