The DeepSeek R1 artificial intelligence (AI) model has been the talk of the town for the past week, claiming to perform better than models launched by OpenAI and Meta but with hundreds of times less investment. With DeepSeek now the most downloaded app on the App Store, Microsoft has also announced support for running DeepSeek R1 directly on Copilot+ PCs.
This supported version has been optimized for Copilot+ PCs equipped with the latest Snapdragon X-series and Intel Lunar Lake chips. Initially, support will be provided for the DeepSeek-R1-Distill-Qwen-1.5B model first, before expanding to the 7B and 15B models via AI Tookit.
This allows application development using DeepSeek R1 to be run directly from the Copilot+ PC. This way, all data processing will be done by the machine without being sent to servers in China.
Data sharing with China has already become an issue among users in the United States, with some suggesting that the DeepSeek app be banned like TikTok. It also allows for faster processing and AI mode to be used without an internet connection.
