Thinking Machines Lab Founded by Former OpenAI CTO and Staff

Last year, OpenAI lost dozens of founders and top executives, including CTO Mira Murati and co-founder Ilya Sutskever. Today, Mira Murati announced the formation of a new artificial intelligence (AI) company, Thinking Machines Lab, along with former OpenAI co-founder John Schulman and former chief research officer Barret Zoph.

Muraru will serve as CEO, Schulman as chief scientist, and Zoph as CTO at Thinking Machines Lab. In addition to these three individuals, the company's staff also includes those involved in the development of the ChatGPT, Character.AI, and Mistral models.

In an official statement published on its official website, Thinking Machine Lab said that while AI is rapidly developing, there are still gaps in the scientific community's understanding of its capabilities. Access and knowledge about AI development are still limited to research laboratories.

Thinking Machine Lab will focus on developing multimodal systems that allow humans and AI to work together. In addition, a system that is more adaptable to various human work tasks will also be developed compared to existing systems that focus on mathematical ability and producing programs.
