Apple's own video streaming platform, Apple TV+, was launched in 2019. At the beginning of its launch, it was only limited to Apple devices and access via the web. Gradually after a year, Apple TV+ was given to webOS for LG televisions, Tizen for Samsung televisions and Android TV. Now after 6 years, the app for Android phones and tablets has finally been introduced. In this article, I will share how to subscribe and use the Apple TV app on Android devices.
On your Android phone or tablet, go to the Play Store app store and download Apple TV. Through it, you can stream Apple Originals movie, TV series, animation and documentary content. In addition, the MLS season pass can also be subscribed to and accessed directly from this application. Here are the features and functions provided in the application;
From the application settings, you can go directly to the Play Store Payment & Subscription page.
Thumbnail images can be selected whether you want static or Poster Art.
For those who subscribe to MLS, there will be a display of sports scores.
Play history can also be displayed.
The next episode can be played automatically.
There is support for adult/sensitive content restrictions with a code.
There are two streaming/download options, namely Data Saver/Fast Download or High Quality.
Finally, there is a choice of language for downloading.
For the video player, it supports vertical display which is rarely offered by other video streaming applications. Then there is support for subtitle options, language and picture-in-picture display but there is no option to control the playback speed. The application is very simple with only displaying Apple TV+, MLS, Download and Search on the bar below.
What is disappointing is that the application does not have an option to use Google Cast. Perhaps Apple wants to limit the use of Apple AirPlay and the application to Android TV/Google TV only. The Apple TV application on Android also does not allow users to access other digital content that has been purchased. Access to the movie purchase store is also not allowed at this time.
For video content, Apple also offers access to bonus content such as deleted scenes, behind-the-scenes videos, interviews with actors and filmmakers and more. 4K HDR video streaming support and Dolby high-quality audio are also available.
For those interested in MLS content, the app allows you to purchase a monthly pass or season pass for RM69.90 per month or RM449 per season. To subscribe to Apple TV+, simply tap Subscribe and it will open the Play Store billing page for you to make payments via Touch ‘n Go, FPX, Boost, ShopeePay or card. Subscription prices start at RM29.90 for individuals, RM8.90 for students (via Apple Music) or the Apple One plan which starts at RM34.90 per month.
As a loyal Apple TV user and a fan of Apple TV+ content, this app for Android devices is a real treat, especially since I’ve switched completely to Android. Now I’m no longer limited to streaming on a web browser or television. Although it’s not perfect and many features are missing, the app’s performance is surprisingly fast. It’s simple and easy to use.
