US and UK Refuse to Sign Safe, Fair AI Development Agreement

At the AI Action Summit in Paris this weekend, 60 countries agreed to sign a treaty to develop safe, fair and conclusive artificial intelligence (AI). This is to ensure that the AI developed respects human rights, is human-centered, ethical, safe, secure and trustworthy while at the same time emphasizing the need and urgency to reduce inequality and help developing countries build their AI capacity.

While other developed countries such as France, Japan, China and Germany agreed to the agreement, the US and the UK are the two countries that refused to do so. The US decision is in line with the keynote speech given by Vice President JD Vance who said that any regulation of AI development that hinders progress and any form of content moderation will be seen as an act of censorship by the authorities.

The Trump administration has already stressed that it will ensure that America remains the world leader in AI technology. This includes placing various restrictions on the sale of chips to countries that are not close allies and enemies such as China and Russia.
