AWAS Camera System Uses AI to Track Drivers Breaking Speed Limits – Initial Trials to Start in June 2025

The Automated Awareness Safety System (AWAS) camera will use artificial intelligence (AI) technology to detect drivers breaking the speed limit starting in June 2025. According to reports in the New Straits Times (NST) and Berita Harian, it uses a point-to-point speed detection method that replaces static cameras to measure the duration and distance a vehicle travels between two locations.

As stated, these cameras are installed at toll plazas to record the travel time of drivers. If they are found to arrive earlier than the estimated travel time, the vehicle registration number will be detected and a summons will be issued automatically.

This means that drivers cannot escape detection if they exceed the set speed limit based on the time period measured through this new system. The system also uses AI to identify if drivers are trying to extend their travel time by stopping at certain locations to avoid being detected by the system.

Initial trials will be conducted at several major highway locations including the Genting Sempah Tunnel to Gombak rest stop on the KL-Karak Expressway, and the Senawang toll plaza to Simpang Ampat toll plaza on the North-South Expressway (PLUS).

It will also be installed at high-risk locations such as accidents with longer travel distances. If successful, the trials will be fully implemented for road safety purposes.
