Chromecast (Gen 2) and Chromecast Audio Owners Report Devices No Longer Working

Chromecast (Gen 2) and Chromecast Audio owners around the world are reporting that the dongles that allow content from smartphones to be cast to their TVs or speakers are no longer working. When trying to use the Google Cast feature, they receive an “untrusted device” warning message on the device.

Google is aware of the issue and has said that they will fix the issue as soon as possible. They are also asking owners to perform a factory reset of the device at this time. In some online discussions, the issue is related to the device’s qualification certificate issued by Google that allows the Cast feature to be used.

The authorization certificate for Chromecast (Gen 2) and Chromecast Audio expired on March 9 after 10 years. The same issue has not been reported by owners of Google Chromecast (Gen 3), Google Chromecast Ultra, Google Chromecast with Google TV and Google TV Streamer.

Google insists that this is not a sign that the two devices, which were launched in 2015, will be discontinued. So far only Chromecast (Gen 1) has had its support terminated in 2023.
