In January, Google was pleased to open source the source code of the PebbleOS e-ink screen smartwatch operating system. This indirectly prompted the original creator, Eric Migicovsky, to work with the community to introduce rePebble. Most recently, Migicovsky has already launched two smartwatches running PebbleOS.
Core Devices is Migicovsky's new company that will manage the new PebbleOS watches. Two watches have been introduced, namely the Core 2 Duo and the Core Time 2. Just like the Pebble era, both new watches also offer the same core features, namely an always-on e-ink screen, long-lasting battery, simple and beautiful design, physical buttons, and can be hacked.
Core 2 Duo – The Birth of Everything
According to Migicovsky, the Core 2 Duo is the rebirth of the Pebble 2 or "Do Over". It offers more or less the same features and specifications as the Pebble 2 but runs a new generation chip and an updated operating system. The screen is a 1.26-inch black and white e-ink, supports over 10,000 watch faces, supports IPX8 splash protection, has a built-in microphone, has a foot tracking feature, uses a standard 22mm watch strap and comes in a choice of black or white in a polycarbonate frame.
The Core 2 Duo has a battery life of up to 30 days compared to the previous 7 days. It is also powered by a Nordic nRF52840 BLE chip that supports low-power Bluetooth connectivity, has a built-in speaker, has a vibration motor, more durable buttons, as well as a barometer and compass sensor for more user-friendly use.
This watch is said to be identical to the original so old review videos, old review articles and other things related to the Pebble 2 can still be used as a reference.
Core Time 2 – Imagine a Pebble Time 2 Pro?
Yes, for this watch it is just a pair of Pebble Time 2 but the version that Migicovsky has been dreaming of for a long time. It is the perfect iteration, maybe the Pebble Time 2 Pro or Plus? The Core Time 2 is a PebbleOS watch designed specifically for serious users.
It uses a larger 1.5-inch (64 colors) color e-ink screen, still supports the same PebbleOS with over 10,000 watch faces, but the watch is built with an aluminum body. The battery remains the same at 30 days, uses a flat glass screen, the screen is a touch type for widget support, there is a heart rate sensor, and everything else remains the same as the Core 2 Duo.
Both the Core Time 2 and Core 2 Duo support more or less the same features and functions. For example, PebbleOS can provide notifications, alarm support, clock, calendar, music control and basic fitness and health tracking features. All original PebbleOS watch faces and apps remain supported, but the watch face size will be slightly smaller on the Core Time 2. The apps.rebble.io app store will also remain active for all users.
The Core Devices team cautions that the Core 2 Duo and Core Time 2 are for fans of the original and users who can appreciate a community-based product. They are not a replacement for existing watches on the market. The Core 2 Duo will be priced at $149 (~RM660) and shipping will begin in July this year. The Core Time 2 will be priced at $225 (~RM997) and shipping will begin in December this year.
