Google and MediaTek are reported to be working together to develop the artificial intelligence chips (AI) Tensor Processing Unit (TPU) used by Google at their data center. According to The Information report, the first TPU chip of Google and MediaTek's cooperation will be released next year. Previously the TPU chip used by Google was produced by Broadcom.
Collaboration between the two companies is shocking as just five years ago, MediaTek still has a reputation as a manufacturer of affordable smartphone chips behind Qualcomm, Intel and Samsung. But their reputation is even better after removing the GB10 Grace Blackwell chip used on the AI Mini Nvidia Project Digits Superkomputer AI earlier this year.
The main technology companies all have their own chip project. Microsoft with MAIA 100 chips and Cobalt 100. Amazon with Trainium2 and Graviton4 while the Meta is with their MTIA chip series. All were developed so that the company will not rely entirely on Nvidia which holds 95% of the AI chip market at the end of 2024.
