Google’s artificial intelligence (AI) model has been used to accurately predict the weather up to 15 days ahead, detect breast cancer cells, and find all the protein structures that exist for the advancement of science. Earlier this month, they launched SpeciesNet, an AI model that can identify wildlife species based on captured images.
SpeciesNet was developed to help scientists identify and classify images of animals captured by trail cameras placed in the rain. In tests, SpeciesNet was able to classify animals into 2000 categories and species with 94.5% accuracy. Google used 65 million open-source wildlife images to train SpeciesNet.
The AI model has been developed since 2019 and is accessible using the Wildlife Insights service. With the latest launch of SpeciesNet, it is now offered as open source for use by scientists. For those who want to download SpeciesNet, it can be accessed via this link.
