Officially, after more than a decade of Android users having Google Assistant as their default virtual assistant, it will be shut down and replaced with Gemini. Yes, Google will end support for Google Assistant by replacing it with Gemini entirely. Gradually, little by little, Google Assistant features and functions will be discontinued.
Google has been retiring some of Google Assistant's features and functions since 2024. This year they are ending 7 additional features as a reminder to users that Gemini is the next virtual assistant.
You can no longer use voice commands to like photos, share, get information such as location and time the photo was taken for Google Photos. The same feature can be done directly from the Google Photos app.
You can no longer change the slideshow of photos on the smart screen using your voice.
Conversational translation mode is now not possible with Google Assistant but is limited to Google Translate only.
You can ask Google Assistant to set birthday reminders, but no more notifications will be given.
The feature of scheduling and listening to Family Bell is discontinued.
Daily weather updates are now no longer supported.
Car accessories with built-in microphones can no longer summon Google Assistant. They are limited to what is supported from within the inforia only. Coming in the Pixel 10, Google is expected to introduce Pixie, a kind of AI agent-like application that may use Gemini technology. For now, the Hey, Gemini command is still not supported and is limited to Hey, Google or Okay, Google. Who knows, in the future we will only have to say Gemini or Pixie – or maybe look at the device screen and can continue to summon? Let's wait and see.
