Napster Acquired for $207 Million – The First Internet Music Sharing Service

Napster was one of the earliest services in the early internet era, focusing on music sharing services. It was launched in 1999, however, the service was terminated in 2001 due to various legal problems due to copyright infringement and others.

Napster's assets subsequently changed hands several times. Most recently, Napster was acquired by a company focused on 3D technology, called Infinite Reality.

Infinite Reality acquired it for $207 million, and used Napster as a marketing tool in the meta-message world. According to the initial plan, Infinite Reality wanted to allow users to create 3D virtual spaces, and do several things including attending concerts or listening to songs through the virtual 3D space.

Napster is said to have streaming licenses for millions of songs, which is very useful for Infinite Reality in venturing into this new arena. Roughly speaking, it is also given a description like Clubhouse with a focus on music.

With this development, let's all look forward to the beginning of a new Napster era.
