Fentanyl-type drugs have now been detected in the Klang Valley after their presence was detected in sewage water samples in the Subang Valley. The Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (NCID) successfully detected it with the help of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia and this is evidence that the synthetic opium factory is located nearby.
Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Datuk Seri Ayob Khan was also quoted as saying that fentanyl has now also been detected in water samples from Johor. This sewage water analysis technique will be used by PDRM to conduct intelligence and find the location of fentanyl drug factories because the search can now be better targeted.
NCID and UKM have collaborated since 2022 with a focus on scientific research related to illicit substances, including new psychoactive substances (NPS) and efforts to curb illegal drug production. This collaboration has received funding of RM 8.4 million from the Ministry of Home Affairs (KDN) with six work packages outlined covering aspects of technology development, research, forensics, data management and capacity building.
This type of fentanyl drug has been nicknamed the “zombie drug” because its users will look like zombies who are afraid to live. The spread of fentanyl in the United States is now at a serious level with addicts standing in groups in open places and police forces equipped with NARCAN sprayers to save lives in the event of an overdose incident.
As the situation is getting more serious, President Trump has imposed high tariffs on Canada and Mexico to force the authorities of the two American countries to tighten border checks so that fentanyl is difficult to smuggle in.
